Ahrefs workflow

Ahrefs is the premier competitive intelligence and link-graph database suite utilized by SEO practitioners for Backlink Profile Auditing, Competitor Keyword Gap Analysis, Topical Authority Mapping, and Outbound Digital PR Target Discovery. While Google Search Console provides exact first-party data for your own domain, Ahrefs illuminates the entire competitive search landscape, allowing engineers and strategists to reverse-engineer why competitors rank on page 1 and exactly how many links and content hubs are required to displace them. Mastering Ahrefs workflows requires moving beyond basic domain metrics (DR/UR) toward systematic Content Gap intersections, Anchor Text Toxicity Audits, and Organic Competitor Velocity Tracking.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Conduct deep backlink profile audits to identify toxic link velocity, manipulative anchor text, and link reclamation opportunities.
  • Execute multi-domain Content Gap analyses to uncover high-volume, high-converting keyword targets where competitors rank but your domain is invisible.
  • Reverse-engineer top-performing competitor content hubs (Top Pages by Links) to construct superior, highly linkable educational assets.

Core Ahrefs operational modules deconstructed

To extract practitioner-level value, workflows must center around four primary Ahrefs modules:

The command center for analyzing any domain, subfolder, or exact URL on the internet.

  • Domain Rating (DR 0-100): A logarithmic calculation measuring the strength and quantity of a website's overall external backlink profile relative to every other site in Ahrefs' database.
  • URL Rating (UR 0-100): A granular calculation measuring the exact link authority passing directly to a specific individual page URL. Note: A page with UR 45 on a DR 30 domain will frequently outrank a page with UR 10 on a DR 80 domain for competitive terms.

2. Keywords Explorer (Keyword Difficulty & SERP Analysis)

Provides exact keyword difficulty (KD 0-100), estimated monthly search volume across global engines, and detailed historical SERP position tracking.

  • Keyword Difficulty (KD): In Ahrefs, KD is calculated purely based on the number of unique referring domains (RDs) linking to the current top 10 ranking pages. A KD of 60 means you need roughly ~130 unique referring domains linking directly to your target page to break into the top 10.

3. Content Explorer (Linkable Asset & Digital PR Discovery)

A searchable database of over 14 billion web pages filtered by social shares, organic traffic, referring domains, and publication dates. Used to find trending topics and journalists linking to industry studies.

4. Site Audit (Cloud Technical Crawler)

An automated cloud crawler that runs continuous background checks across your domain to monitor internal link health, broken links (404s), and Core Web Vitals.

Workflow: Multi-domain content gap analysis (The Growth Engine)

The most profitable workflow in Ahrefs is the Content Gap Analysis, which isolates high-value search queries that currently drive traffic to your direct competitors while your domain ranks nowhere (Position > 100):

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| AHREFS SITE EXPLORER -> CONTENT GAP SETUP |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| Show keywords that ALL of the below targets rank for: |
| [Target 1] competitor-a.com | Range: Top 10 |
| [Target 2] competitor-b.com | Range: Top 10 |
| [Target 3] competitor-c.com | Range: Top 10 |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| But the following target does NOT rank for: |
| [Your Domain] your-site.com | Range: Any position (or > position 20) |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| FILTERS TO APPLY TO OUTPUT TABLE: |
| `Keyword Difficulty (KD)` <= 35 (Attainable authority range) |
| `Volume` >= 500 (Meaningful commercial search demand) |
| `Intersection` = At least 2 competitors ranking in Top 10 |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Strategic Action from Content Gap Output:

When you execute this filter, you extract a curated list of proven, validated search queries where search intent is well-defined, competitors are actively capturing customers, and keyword difficulty is within striking distance for your current Domain Rating. Group these keywords into topical clusters and feed them directly to your content engineering team.

To safeguard domain authority and prepare for negative SEO or algorithmic link link reviews (SpamBrain), run a systematic backlink profile audit:

Step 1: Analyze Anchor Text Distribution (Site Explorer -> Anchors)

Inspect the Anchor Text report for your root domain. A healthy, natural backlink profile maintains strict statistical distribution:

  • 50% to 70% Branded / URL Anchors: ("Acme Corp", "acme.com", "Visit Acme Analytics").
  • 15% to 25% Generic / Conversational Anchors: ("click here", "source", "study", "website").
  • 5% to 10% Partial-Match / Topical Anchors: ("Acme CRM software", "data analytics guide").
  • < 5% Exact-Match Commercial Keywords: ("best enterprise crm software"). If your exact-match commercial anchor text exceeds 15%+ of your total profile, your domain faces severe vulnerability to algorithmic link suppression. Dilute immediately with branded PR campaigns.

Sort your referring domains by DR Ascending (DR 0 to 5) and filter for domains linking to you > 100 times. If you uncover thousands of automated, scraped blogspot directories or foreign spam domains linking via exact-match anchors, add those domains to a disavow file (disavow.txt) and submit via GSC if manual action warnings arise.

Navigate to Pages -> Best by links and filter HTTP status code to 404 not found. Sort descending by Referring Domains (RDs).

  • Action: You have just isolated dead, broken URLs (404s) on your own website that currently have active, external referring domains pointing to them. Pass this exact list to engineering: set up 301 redirects pointing these dead URLs to their nearest live category or article equivalents to immediately reclaim lost PageRank.

Workflow: Reverse-engineering competitor linkable assets

To determine what type of content naturally attracts external backlinks in your vertical, reverse-engineer your top competitor:

Asset Discovery Protocol:

  1. Enter your primary competitor's domain into Site Explorer.
  2. Navigate to Pages -> Best by links.
  3. Filter out their Homepage (/) and primary product/pricing pages (/pricing, /shop).
  4. Look at the top 10 educational or data URLs sorted by Referring Domains (RDs).
  5. Pattern Analysis: Did the competitor earn 450 referring domains by publishing a $ USD to EUR Exchange Rate Calculator? A 2024 Industry Salary Study? Or a Comprehensive Glossary of Terms?
  6. Execution Strategy (The Skyscraper / Upgrade Model): Build an architectural upgrade of their top-linked asset — build a faster calculator with better UI, a larger survey dataset (N=2,000 vs N=500), or pre-rendered semantic tables — and execute direct outreach to the domains currently linking to the competitor's inferior version.

Checklist

  • Domain Rating (DR) and URL Rating (UR) baselines documented and tracked monthly against top 3 direct SERP competitors.
  • Multi-domain Content Gap analysis executed quarterly to identify new keyword intersections (KD <= 35, Volume >= 500).
  • Sitewide Anchor Text distribution audited to ensure exact-match commercial keyword anchors remain < 5% of total link profile.
  • Broken Link Reclamation audit (Best by links -> HTTP 404) run monthly, converting broken inbound link equity into active 301 redirects.
  • Top competitor linkable assets reverse-engineered to inform original research and programmatic calculator roadmaps.
  • Ahrefs Alerts (Alerts -> New Backlinks & New Keywords) configured to receive instant notifications of competitor ranking velocity.

Measurement

MetricWhat it tracks
Net Referring Domain (RD) VelocityTracks month-over-month empirical link acquisition; healthy domains gain +10 to +50 net unique RDs monthly
Content Gap Target Capture RateMeasures how many newly published articles successfully rank inside the top 10 for previously identified gap keywords
Reclaimed PageRank Equity (Total RDs pointing to reclaimed 301s)Quantifies the exact authority salvaged by fixing internal 404 pages carrying external backlinks
Organic Traffic Value (Ahrefs OTV)Establishes the estimated monthly PPC cost required to buy the exact organic traffic your rankings currently generate

Common mistakes

Treating Domain Rating (DR) as a direct Google ranking factor. Google does not know or care what your Ahrefs DR is. DR is purely a third-party relative metric calculated by Ahrefs based on link volume. Obsessing over increasing DR from 60 to 65 by building thousands of low-quality directory links provides zero ranking benefit in real Google SERPs and wastes link-building budgets. Focus on acquiring contextually relevant links to specific money URLs (increasing URL Rating).

Selecting keyword targets strictly based on high Search Volume while ignoring KD. Assigning a content writer to write a 1,500-word blog post targeting "CRM software" (Volume: 150,000 | KD: 89) when your domain has DR 22 guarantees failure. Your page will rank on page 8 (Position 75+). Always match keyword difficulty (KD) to your domain's realistic URL Rating capabilities.

Disavowing low-quality links aggressively without a manual action. Practitioners frequently panic when they see random low-DR scraper sites (blogspot, .xyz) pointing to their domain in Ahrefs and rush to disavow hundreds of domains. Google's modern algorithms (SpamBrain) automatically ignore and neutralize low-quality scraper links. Only disavow links if you have received a formal Manual Action notice inside Google Search Console or if you are cleaning up a known, deliberate historical paid-link spam campaign executed by a previous agency.

Looking at competitor backlink counts without inspecting link quality. Seeing that a competitor has 10,000 backlinks and assuming you need 10,000 backlinks to compete is an analytical trap. Filter their backlink profile in Site Explorer by Dofollow + One link per domain + DR >= 30 + Traffic >= 500. You will almost always discover that out of their 10,000 raw links, only 150 to 200 genuine, high-authority referring domains are actually driving their page 1 rankings.
